Is this the mark of the anti-Christ or the mark of the Lord Jesus? Everybody has a scent. When you arrive at a place, people know you are around. Your scent is what distinguishes you from the other person. It could be your smile, your perfume, the way you talk or your overall presence. It is the same with God’s children, Christians. As a child of God, you carry a scent. As a follower of Christ redeemed and saved, you have a spiritual birthmark that says you belong to Christ. It is invisible in the physical realm but visible in the spiritual realm, it is the mark of the Lord.
The mark of God distinguishes individuals, families, nations. It separates evil from good and light from darkness. The mark of God upon a person will separate them from any harm. As a Christian, you carry the image of Christ. It is the image of distinction. It is the mark of the Lord about you that distinguishes you, as a salt and light of the world from the darkness of this world.
The mark of God will protect you from all harm. It will stop the power of the enemies from attacking you. The children of Israel were marked for protection. When the angel of death visited the land of Egypt, the children of Israel were protected from harm. Why? Because they had the mark of the Lord on them through the blood of the lamb. They had been instructed the night before to mark their lamp posts with the blood of the lamb. Jesus is the lamb of God who died for your sins, therefore, you bear upon your body the mark that says you belong to God. You no longer have a place or anything to do with darkness.
Daniel, because of his commitment to his God was thrown into the lion’s den. He prayed openly to God seven times, day and night. Yet the lions could not harm him, instead, God protected him from the mouths of the lion,(Daniel 6) that was the mark of the Lord at work on him. Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego were thrown into the furnace of blazing fire hotter and stronger than a human body could consume yet they walked inside that fire without any harm (Daniel 3:23), they had the mark of God upon them.
The mark of the Lord could also be the sufferings Christians endure in the name of Jesus. Paul the apostle made it clear that nobody should trouble him any longer because he had the mark of the Lord Jesus upon him. He had been chained, beaten and imprisoned for the gospel and he earnestly desired that he had no more. The marks he had endeared him to the sufferings of Jesus. Paul boasted of these marks for they were the proofs of his loyalty and commitment to the cause of the Christ. for “we always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body”. 2 Corinthians 4:10
When you take a stand for God. When you choose Jesus and stand in your faith in him. When you show your commitment and your loyalty to God and His son Jesus Christ, by living a holy life, self-denial subdued worldly affections. And when the zeal to proclaim Christ consumes you, you strive for perfection to be like Jesus and when the world hates you for all these, you can boldly say to the world, “Let no man trouble me for I bear on my body the marks of the Lord Jesus” for that is your evidence that you belong to Jesus.
