The world celebrates pride but God detests pride and haughty eyes(Prov. 6:16-17). These are punishable sins before God. They separate man from God and creates a wedge between man and his creator. Adam and Eve lost the paradise because of pride. Lucifer lost his place in heaven because of pride. Nebuchadnezzar was brought low to eat with animals because of pride. Judas hung on the tree because of pride and shame, had he acknowledged his sin, repented and asked for forgiveness, his story could have been different.
Pride deceives (Jer. 49:16), it clouds your judgement making you feel high and mighty. It stirs up conflicts (Prov. 13:10, Prov. 28:25) making you look down at others and thinking too highly of yourself. It eventually shames and brings low (Prov. 29:23). Haughtiness keeps people away from you and lets you suffer in silence. There is no gain in being proud and haughty, it always ends in disaster. Whatever you do, stay away from both pride and haughtiness. Do it for yourself, do it to obey God. Do it to get God on your side. For when God is on your side, nobody can stand against you.
“There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers” (Proverbs 6:16-19).
Do you have a problem with pride and haughtiness? Are you self-righteous, always slashing people with your sharp tongue? Do you rely on your abilities more than on God and do you rob it on other people’s faces? Remember pride goes before a destruction and haughtiness before a fall. What can you gain from either of them? If struggling with pride and you need God to forgive you for being proud, then say the prayer of forgiveness below.
“I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Mathew 18:3
Prayer of forgiveness over pride and haughtiness
Forgive me for thinking too highly of myself more than others. Break me. Remove pride from my heart. I have deceived myself for far too long. I have been foolish in my thinking and behaviour. Remove far from my heart pride and haughtiness, draw me closer and nearer to you. This I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
You resist the proud. Forgive me for being so proud and haughty. Forgive me for being so judgemental of others. Search my heart, cleanse me and purify me of this detestable act. Help me to see the log in my eyes and help me to remove it. Do not turn your eyes away from me. Restore me back to you. This I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
