Fasting is a spiritual habit to cultivate not a religious exercise as many observe it. Jesus exemplified the ultimate habits to cultivate when fasting. He understood the strategies of the devil to use food to distract from his mission. And he attacked his tempter head on with spiritual habits developed during the course of his fast.
The habit Jesus cultivated to win the battle with the devil allowed him to have victory over satan.
- Jesus subjected himself under the mighty hand of God
- He left all the distraction of the world and went to a secluded place, the wilderness.
- He chose to let go of everyday habits such as eating, talking etc.
- He remained incredibly focused on his mission and
- He soaked himself in the word of God.
As a child of God, you must understand one of the schemes of the devil is to tempt you using your weaknesses. He will try to distract you from denying yourself for God and tempt you with your old habits of doing things. He will come with his old tricks to tempt you on three different levels of temptation using the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life.
Whenever you feel like you are losing focus on your fast, consider the main reason why you are fasting. When you feel weak and you feel yourself falling back to old habits, follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Make a choice to focus on God and your goals. Be empowered with the word of God and communications with the Holy Spirit. But above all, let one of your reasons to fast be to get rid of your old self(Luke 9:23; I Corinthians 15:31, Galatians 2:20), shed bad habits like a snake sheds its old skin, put on a new self in Christ Jesus and cultivate new habits acceptable before God.
Make a bold declaration of faith
I declare I will cultivate new habits in Christ Jesus. I take captive every thought within me to the obedience of Christ. I will no longer subject myself to old ways of thinking or do things but I will submit myself to the authority of Christ, to renew my mind, transform my life and to be conformed to the image of Christ. I will do things without grumbling and complaining, but I will clothe myself with the Lord Jesus Christ and not think about how to gratify the desires of sinful nature. This is my declaration.
