Feeling abandoned? Jesus did too!
At the point of great persecution, Jesus was abandoned and betrayed by those closest to him. One of his closest disciples betrayed him. One of his best allies denied ever knowing him. The other ten disciples fled from the scene without any trace. And those followers? they were nowhere to be found!
Jesus the saviour, Emmanuel the healer, the comforter trapped in the human body yet free in his mind, burned in his flesh with pain and wounded in his heart by betrayal and abandonment! How could he have been so betrayed by those closest to him? Where did he do wrong?
He fed them. Provided for them. Healed them. Delivered them. Changed their lives from worst to best. Even promised them eternal life. Some of them he delivered from a life of loneliness and condemnation yet they betrayed him. Jesus had every right to turn his back on humanity at that very moment but he held on. Everything Jesus endured he did it for your sake. Jesus did not have to endure any pain whatsoever but he did it so that you can be healed.
The saviour of the world subjected himself to grievous brutality for your sake. He did it for you to know that He feels your pain. He went through it all for you to know that you are not alone in these challenges of life. Jesus already went ahead of you to fight on your behalf and to win the battle for you. Your victory over abandonment, betrayal and hurt is certain in Christ. All you need to do is align yourself with God’s word and extract the truth for your life.
She struck first.
Those words stung like bees. Someone I respected and expected would defend me in the face of the opposition said those words about me. I felt so hurt. I felt betrayed. I felt like a dagger had just gone through my heart and pulled right out so coldly. How could he have betrayed me like this? First, he abandoned me to face harsh criticisms and judgements from his people and now he said those words about me?
My first inclination as a human was to cut him out of my life completely. I didn’t want to associate with him any more and the next time I see him, I intended to give him a piece of my mind. Oh, I was upset! Many thoughts and questions went through my mind as I considered my next move.
God is my defence, who can destroy me?
Then the Lord stepped in and spoke to my heart. “I am for you, I am not against you”, “I am your defender and I will not abandon you”. “I am your defence who can destroy you? Phew! This was the affirmation I so needed. God is for me and who can stand against me?
When we have been hurt especially by loved ones, feelings of abandonment, betrayal and hurt don’t often leave us easily but we can comfort ourselves in the story of Jesus Christ our saviour. When He was faced with harsh criticisms and judgement that could have left him with these feelings, he focused on his father’s will, he forgave his disciples and he fulfilled his purpose in life. Not once is it recorded in the Bible that Jesus dwelt on the hurt and pain his disciples might have caused him. It is natural to go through emotions and feelings but it is not natural to dwell on them as they can be detrimental to your health.
God sees and knows the truth.
When people teamed up against me, God saw them and He knew the truth. He always deals with the truth and He did not abandon me. God knows the truth in all situation and He allows the truth to be revealed in due time. God sees your heart and He knows what you are going through. He is for you and not against you. Your feelings are understandable but do not dwell on those feelings. Shift your focus on Christ and allow Him to take centre stage in the situation.
Jesus could have given up on dying for humanity because of the way he was treated by people but he held on to his faith in God. He could have retaliated and cursed those who mistreated him but he was gracious and merciful till the very end. Have you ever been through a situation where it seems like everybody is against you? Are you feeling betrayed, hurt and abandoned? Do you expect that at least one person will stand up and defend you in the face of opposition but they have taken a different turn right before your eyes? I have experienced all of these and so had Christ.
If you are feeling betrayed, abandoned and hurt by your closest allies, friends, family, colleagues, employer, follower, leader or whoever you hold in high regard, the following declarations will help shift your focus on who really matters and what you need to do. So speak the word and change your world for good.
God is for me, nobody can stand against me. God is fighting my battle, the enemy will be defeated. For God is my defence and my rock, the effect of hurt, betrayal and abandonment will not cast a shadow over my identity (Romans 8:31)
I have not been called into hatred but to love, to forgive and to pray for my enemies. Therefore I pray and declare God’s love over all those against me. I declare that their hearts will be flooded with God’s love and they will experience the love of God that surpasses any human love (Ephesians 3:19).
For the weapons of my warfare are not the weapons of the world but they have divine power to demolish strongholds. Therefore I release my weapon of faith today and I destroy all human reasonings and false arguments set up against the knowledge of God in my life, and I take captive every thought and they shall be obedient to Christ henceforth.
God is for me. God has got my back in all situations. God loves me and he defends my case in the midst of my enemies (John 3:16).
I forgive you and I bless you in the name of the Lord. Though you betray, hurt and abandoned me, I will not hold against you but I will walk in the love of God and I pronounce God’s blessing over you. I declare that you will be filled with the love of God beyond your imagination from this time forth.
I declare that I am strong and courageous in the face of adversity. I am not afraid of what mere mortal can do to me. This situation will not bring me down for the Lord my God is with me. He will leave me nor forsake me (1st Chronicles 28:20).
I declare that this situation will work together for my good. My God is turning this around for His glory. His hands are upon me and He will bring me justice (Romans 8:28).
