Forgiveness is not always easy most especially when you have to forgive yourself. It may be easy to forgive others when you do not see them every day but you cannot run away from yourself and this makes it harder. But however hard this is for you, you have to let bygone be bygone and you have to embrace God’s love in order to move forward.
We have all been through those moments when you wish you hadn’t said that or you hadn’t done that and it may be difficult to move forward from the mistakes we have made. In those moments when you are finding it difficult to let go of the shame you have caused, you may need to turn to God for help, comfort and consolation because your mistakes are all part o your learning curve in life.
I watched a Christian leader recently recounted his sins to some of the people he leads. With his head bowed and his voice shaken over what he thinks is an unforgivable offence, he was finding it difficult to come to terms with what he had done wrong. At the end of his confession was a piece of information even more shocking, he was going to step down from his position as a leader and he had already told the church council about it.
His offence? He defended himself and his family before his non-Christian neighbour. They acted outrageously towards his family for many years until he eventually reacted. Now he found it difficult to let go and to forgive himself. This leader sees himself as a good Christian. He tries to live like Christ in an environment where only he and his family are Christians and he wished to witness to his neighbours one day. To him, his overreaction had cost heaven to lose a soul and he thinks he is not worthy to be a leader in the church any longer as a result.
When it comes to that moment when you are struggling to shake off the burden of your mistakes in life, there are at least three things you need to do in order to bring you back to a state of peace;
- Repent, it always precedes forgiveness.
- Recount the words of Jesus on forgiveness.
- The secret to forgiving yourself is to bury yourself in God’s love.
Speak the word of God over Yourself and Change your World for Good.
Today I come in humility before my father in heaven asking for the forgiveness of my sins and I know I am forgiven (Psalms 51:5).
I am but a sinner from my mother’s womb but as I confess my sins before my heavenly father today, He has removed my sins from me as far as the east is from the west. I am forgiven (Psalm 103:12).
Today I will not dwell on thoughts of shame and guilt but I embrace the love of my heavenly father whose grace is sufficient for me in times such as this (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Today I come before the throne of grace in humility and with confidence, that I may receive mercy and find grace to help me in time of need (Hebrews 4:16)
God is not surprised by my mistakes. He is using them to train me and teach me to walk in the paths of righteousness. I am loved by God. He is using my weaknesses as tools for my growth.
