Let’s talk about… Love

Valentine declaration

It’s coming up to another valentine’s day, so let’s talk about the big L word. Love. When people describe God, they may speak of His love or even say that ‘God is Love’. But what does this really mean? And how can God’s love connect with us on…valentine’s day (especially if you’re single)?

For us to have the emotion of love we must build a relationship with something or someone. We all need to build relationships with others in one way or another. Relationships are built through a connection between two or more people. Sounds simple enough, but whether this be with family or friends, relationships can be hard. They take time, commitment, effort and prioritising.

Therefore, we say God is Love, because he emulates all these things when it comes to us, even if we don’t treat Him in the same way. There is not a minute in the day where He doesn’t have time for us. We are always His priority, and despite the many mistakes we make, God is always ready to forgive us. The proof of God’s Love is demonstrated with the sacrifice of His only son who died on the cross for the sins which we committed.

Now its great to know that we have a Heavenly Father who epitomizes a Love which no being can match, but you’re probably thinking, how can this relate to me finding the perfect being for valentine’s day?! All jokes aside, we’re never going to find someone who loves us the way that God does. But what we can do is look for a potential suitor who has these same qualities of love that God treats us with.

We can all have a relationship status; single, married, or even the dreaded… it’s complicated. No matter what our status is, it is important that we treat and are treated in the likeness that God treats us. Firstly, because God puts us first in everything, in this same way the person we potentially meet should also have their first love as God. He should be put first in all things; that’s right, even before you.

Secondly, God sees us all like kings and queens. We must remember that we are children of the most High God and we deserve to be treated like it. Anyone who doesn’t respect you or treat you like the royalty you are doesn’t deserve your time. Additionally, self-love, especially for those who are single, is important and can be good practice for marriage.

While you’re single don’t be scared to take yourself out for meals, have a mini-vacation on your own, pamper yourself. Do everything that you would do if you were with a spouse. That way you know that if your potential spouse doesn’t treat you close to how good you treat yourself, you may have to reconsider if they’re right for you. Ironically a lot of the things you do when your single you may not have time for when you are married or start a family.

Let us meditate on the word of God which speaks about love in these scriptures.

  • Ephesians 5.25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
  • Mark 10.9Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
  • Romans 12.19 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.’
  • 1 Corinthians 13.13‘Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love.’
