A Christmas Story – Life Lessons from The Three Wise Men

The three wise men had the privilege of knowing first when Christ was born. It was planned for their destinies to be among the first to see the newborn king, to pay him homage and to give him gifts. This life mission filled them with so much joy that they couldn’t keep silent about it when they heard the news that the saviour of Israel had been born! They travelled many days to fulfil their vision in life. To them, there would be no more delay in their lives as their desires had just come to pass.

Thankfully, they were not left to figure it all out by themselves. They had a guiding star to help them on the journey. It would lead them to the king each step of the way as long as they stayed focused on the light. But something happened on the way. They were distracted, and they found themselves in the palace of King Herod. There, they were grilled with questions about their quests until they agreed to return to the palace with more information.

Life sometimes can be like the journey of the three wise men in a quest to find Christ, the Savior.  We are all on assignments on earth, and we all have a part to play in fulfilling God’s promises for our lives. Sometimes, we set out on that journey really excited, and we lose our focus on the purpose of life. In spite of the decision to do our very best in life, we misinterpret our roles in the assignment, and we set off on our own while forgetting we are accountable to one person – Jesus, the son of God.

I hope your heart is open to receive these lessons and you are willing to glean some wisdom from their life journey, for unless we retrace our steps back to Jesus, align ourselves to the assignments he has for us and submit ourselves to our guide the Holy Spirit, we will only continue to wander about in the wilderness of life. We will continue to find ourselves being frustrated with life and being imprisoned by our own.

Here are three lessons that resonate with me from their life journey:

Keep watch
We may not know the reason why the shepherds were chosen as the first to hear the good news of the birth of Jesus, but we do know stories suggest that the news was an answer to their prayers, the fulfilment of their hope, that they too were expecting the promised king as the saviour of Israel. Keeping watch spiritually is often associated with praying, and the more you keep praying, the closer you will be to the fulfilment of God’s promises for your life(Luke 2:8-18).

Be observant
The Bible tells us that the three wise men observed the star of Jesus rising (Matthew 2:2). It reminds me of the story of Elijah, who continued to pray for rain until his servant observed and reported to him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.” (1 King 18:44). It is one thing to pray but it is another thing to observe what is happening as you pray. The more you pray, the more the heaven is shifting for you, so pray and be observant, too.

Be expectant
Being expectant shows your level of faith in God and His ability to fulfil His promises in your life. You cannot continue to pray without expecting a response. This communication between you and God is two-way; you talk to him about anything, and he responds with something, but you must be willing to receive that response no matter what it means to you.

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours”.
– Mark 11:24
