How to Overcome Guilt and Regret When You Want Your Old Life Back

Discover how to overcome guilt and regret with God’s mercy, Bible verses about guilt and regret and Scripture-led support for your mental wellbeing.

how to overcome guilt and regret

God cares deeply about your mental wellbeing. Otherwise, Scripture would not be full of real people who struggled with fear, regret, guilt, shame, exhaustion, low self-worth and emotional heaviness.

Take Peter for example. He carried guilt and regret after denying Jesus, yet Christ restored him. Moses struggled with low confidence, yet God still called him. And Gideon is another good example. He could not see beyond his fear and weakness, yet God gave him a bigger vision.

So, if you are here because you want to know how to overcome guilt and regret, take a breath. You are not beyond God’s mercy.

That temporary lapse of judgement is a painful mistake but it does not have to become your identity. Yes, it may lead you into godly sorrow, repentance and honest reflection, but it does not have to keep you trapped in the past.

God’s Word is full of Bible verses for emotional healing, and if we search further, we also find comforting Bible verses for anxiety and overthinking, Bible verses about guilt and regret, and many other Scriptures that speak into our mental health and wellbeing. That tells me something: life is fragile, but God is faithful.

So, do not allow regret, guilt and shame waste your time, steal your joy or keep the past living rent free in your mind. Instead, let them expose what needs healing and uncover the lies you have believed. Then let God’s truth lead you forward. After all, God’s plans are for good and not for evil, to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Let’s Buy the truth and sell it not (Proverbs 23:23).

Two Truths and a Lie About how to overcome guilt and regret

No matter how many times you replay yesterday, the past cannot become your future unless you let it. So, before we go any further, let’s uncover two truths and a lie that may be keeping you chained to the past.

There is nothing wrong with healthy reflection but when regret keeps you reliving yesterday in your mind, today slowly passes you by. But that is not God’s will for your mental wellbeing. While God can use reflection to bring repentance, the enemy uses shame to keep you stuck. So, do not let guilt, regret and shame steal the time God has given you now.

Regret can make you believe you missed it completely and there is no way forward. But that is not the truth. That relationship that ended is not the end of you. Neither is the opportunity you lost the end of your destiny. That mistake you made is not bigger than God’s mercy.

So, if the past keeps telling you there is nothing better ahead, you may need to break free from deceit, and let His Word renew your mind.

This lie can feel convincing when the present is painful. But the past is the past for a reason.

God’s plan for you is still good and not evil, to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

So, wake up from the lie and let God’s Word shape your future.

If you need help putting your thoughts into words, you may also find encouragement in this Scripture-led Prayer of Confession or in this How to return to God after sinning.

5 Steps to how to overcome guilt and regret Through Scripture

If you’re ready to heal from guilt and shame and truly release emotional pain for your mental wellbeing, these practical action steps can guide your healing:

  1. Confess and Receive Forgiveness: First and foremost, admit your wrongdoings to God with your confessions. Then, believe you have been forgiven and receive your forgiveness from God. After all, the Bible tells us that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us…” – 1 John 1:9

  2. Declare Your New Identity in Christ: At this point, remember that you are no longer your past. Instead, you belong to Jesus Christ. So, claim it and affirm your identity in Christ as often as possible. Let the Scripture be a reminder of His love for you. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

  3. Renew Your Mind Daily: Replace the Lies we tell ourselves with God’s Truth. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2

What does the Bible say about guilt and regret?

The Bible shows us that guilt and regret are not new human experiences. Still, Guilt and regret can lead us into shame or back to God.

Bring the truth before God. Confess what needs confessing, repent where needed, receive His mercy and renew your mind with Scripture. Also, make peace or restitution where it is wise and possible. Do not keep replaying yesterday as if punishment can change the past.

Yes. There are many Bible verses about guilt and regret that speak of mercy, forgiveness and renewal. Scriptures such as Romans 8:1, 1 John 1:9, Psalm 51:10 and Jeremiah 29:11 can help you bring guilt, regret and shame into God’s truth.

No. Regret can show that your conscience is still tender. It can help you reflect, repent, apologise and grow. However, regret becomes harmful when it keeps living rent-free in your mind and stops you from receiving God’s mercy or moving forward.

Because God has better for you always. Even the Bible tells us so: His plans for you are for good and not for evil, to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

So, now is not the time to stay in guilt, regret or shame. Neither is it the time to keep returning to them. 1. Loved your bible declarations and your testimony.. I have a similar story. I am not sure if Judas was Jesus Cousin.

Was Judas Iscariot truly a close relative of Jesus?
No, Judas was not a relative of Jesus. The Judas who betrayed our Lord was named Judas Iscariot. This name is explained in John 6:71, “Judas the son of Simon Iscariot.” (ESV) In the Bible, he was never identified as a family member of Jesus.https://bibleresources.info/was-judas-iscariot-truly-a-close-relative-of-jesus/ I didn’t do a deep search, and this may be one of those things that scholars disagree, but thought I would share.. thank you for your beautiful website.. a true work of God
