Declaration of faith: I am fighting the good fight of faith with Christ and I will win this battle with him on my side (1 Timothy 6:12).
Not many people are aware of the 300 million plus Christians in the world today, who are facing high or extreme levels of persecution for their faith. According to Open Doors UK, the top 5 World Watch list of countries for the persecuted Christians include Afghanistan, North Korea, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Burkina Faso and, please allow me to add to the list, my native country, Nigeria.
I remember getting teary-eyed at the words of the spokesperson for Open doors UK in my church about the persecuted Christians in the world. Their sufferings and their faith through trials and tribulations did not only cause my faith to rise in Christ, but it touched something in me too. It makes me want to seek justice and advocate for the cause of my brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering immensely in the hands of their persecutors. Unfortunately for me, I am aware of my limitations, and that’s why I am choosing to support this cause through Open Doors UK, an international ministry serving the Persecuted Christians and churches worldwide.
If there was ever a time to defend the weak and the fatherless, to uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed (Psalm 82:3), this is the time. Now is the moment when we can choose to obey the instructions of Jesus on being kind to strangers, who are in over 70 countries but facing life imprisonment, deaths, hardships, insults and another form of persecution or the other, all because they have chosen to live godly lives. I believe that this is the time to do whatever we can for any of these strangers because whatever we do for them, we also do for Christ (Matthew 25:40).
As brethren in Christ, When a member of the body of Christ suffers the whole body will suffer along with it. We have the responsibility to support our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering because of the gospel. We may not have the skills or the experience to fight the cause of our persecuted brethren but we can do certain things from wherever we live. This is the time to be the hands and feet of Jesus (1 Corinthians 12:27) so that the whole body of Christ can function effectively together. This cross is not for the persecuted Christians only to carry but for all believers to carry for Christ’s sake.
We can support with prayers, donations, with provisions, raise an awareness of this gruesome act against Christians, send our brothers and sisters gifts, fundraise for the cause of the persecuted or support in any other ways the Lord is asking us to offer our support. If the Lord is leading you to champion the cause of the persecuted Christians, I’d like to implore you to donate to Open Doors UK who will make your contributions count for this mission.
